Three Forks Farms is a certified organic farm on Manitoulin Island, producing vegetables, pasture-raised chicken and garden seeds that are adapted to northern Ontario. Operating Three Forks Farms since 2015, owners Peggy Baillie and Eric Blondin are passionate about the food they grow, the animals they work with and the impact they have on the environment.

Three Forks Farms currently sells products through on-line sales, their on-farm store and at Manitoulin Island and Sudbury area farmers markets. They also run a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program which allows them to build a deeper connection with area residents.
The Sustainable New Agri-Food Products and Productivity (SNAPP) Program assisted Three Forks Farms with the purchase of a large (30’x120’) high tunnel greenhouse. The greenhouse is able to produce for 10 months out of the year and is divided into three sections for year-round growing. The production begins in the early spring with cold-hardy greens. The heat of the summer then allows for production of vining and heat-loving tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons and back to cold-hardy greens again in fall.
Producing vining crops in a greenhouse increases overall plant health. Crops like cucumbers and tomatoes, can be trellised which increases the overall plant health and over all fruit production. The double poly wall of the greenhouse also reduces condensation, which allows for a dryer environment creating less opportunity for disease.
The increase of production allows Three Forks Farms to tap into new markets as the only certified organic greens, cucumbers, and tomatoes available in the area. The extended growing season has also enabled the farm to hire additional employees for a longer period. This is an important goal of the farm as Peggy and Eric value having a business where they can provide hands on training and be a part of creating future farmers.

Cultiver à l’abri sur l’île Manitoulin
Three Forks Farms est une ferme certifiée biologique sur l’île Manitoulin où l’on produit des légumes, des poules de pâturage et des graines de jardin adaptées au climat du Nord de l’Ontario. Three Forks Farms est active depuis 2015 et ses propriétaires Peggy Baillie et Eric Blondin sont de grands adeptes de leurs aliments, de leurs animaux et de leur rapport à l’environnement.

Three Forks Farms vend présentement ses produits à la boutique de la ferme et aux marchés de fermiers dans la région de l’île Manitoulin et de Sudbury. Peggy et Eric offrent aussi un programme d’agriculture soutenue par la communauté (ASC) qui leur permet de tisser des liens plus profonds avec les résidents du coin.
Grâce au nouveau Programme de productivité et des produits agroalimentaires du Nord durables (SNAPP), Three Forks Farms a pu se procurer un grand abri-serre de 30 pi x 120 pi. La serre permet la culture pendant 10 mois de l’année. Elle est divisée en trois sections pour une croissance à longueur d’année. On lance la production tôt au printemps avec des légumes-feuilles résistants au froid. La chaleur de l’été permet ensuite la culture de produits thermophiles sur vignes comme les tomates, les concombres et les melons, avant le retour aux légumes-feuilles résistants au froid à l’automne.
La production de cultures sur vignes en serre augmente la santé globale des plantes. Des treillis sont en place pour les concombres et les tomates, et aident à obtenir une culture en pleine forme et à hausser la production dans l’ensemble. La double paroi en polyéthylène de la serre aide à réduire la condensation assurant un milieu plus sec, et minimisant ainsi la possibilité de maladies.

Grâce à cette hausse de la production, Three Forks Farms peut accéder à de nouveaux marchés en tant que seul fournisseur de légumes-feuilles, concombres et tomates à certification biologique dans la région. La saison de croissance prolongée a également permis à la ferme d’embaucher plus d’employés pendant plus longtemps. C’est l’un des principaux objectifs de la ferme puisque Peggy et Eric accordent une grande importance à l’exploitation d’une entreprise qui offre une formation pratique et contribue à la création de futurs fermiers.
