Algoma Soil & Crop Improvement Association (ASCIA) and the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN) hosting the 2014 Summer Tour
Summer Tour will focus on pasturing livestock, with grazing specialist Dr. Ben Bartlett. Bartlett is retired from Michigan State University’s Extension Service as a livestock educator, and raises sheep and stocker cattle on 900 acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Starting at 7:00 p.m. at the farm of Betty & Jim Withers (433 Reid’s Rd. East Echo Bay, ON – access via Government Rd.), Saul Fraleigh (RAIN Research Technician) and Ben Bartlett will discuss pasture improvement practices during a pasture walk.
At 8:00 p.m., the tour will continue on to Sunnynook Farm (230 Bar River Rd., Echo Bay, ON) with Craig & Sandy Holmberg who will discuss on-farm diversification for new market access. At their farm, Bartlett will speak about managing the variability of weather, which is a timely topic this season. Refreshments will follow at the farm.
